Just a short ferry ride from Dumaguete is Siquijor, an island shrouded in legend and spiritual tradition. The Spanish once called it “Isla de Fuego” or “Island of Fire” due to the glow of thousands of fireflies lighting up its forests at night. To this day, the island is known for its folk healing practices, spiritual rituals, and tales of the supernatural making it one of the most mystical islands in the country.
But Siquijor enchants in more ways than one. Cambugahay Falls, with its multi-tiered cascades and rope swings, is perfect for a refreshing swim. Kagusuan and Salagdoong Beaches offer turquoise waters and dramatic limestone outcrops, while the Tulapos Marine Sanctuary invites you to snorkel among healthy reefs. The town of San Juan features a cool spring park right in its center, ideal for families.
Nature, Spirituality, and Adventure
At over 1,300 feet, Mount Bandilaan is Siquijor’s highest point. The Mount Bandilaan Nature Park features hiking trails, natural springs, caves, and a butterfly sanctuary. The Stations of the Cross, scattered along the trail, offer quiet spots for reflection. Spiritual sites like the Saint Francis of Assisi Church and the San Isidro Labrador Church and Convent one of the oldest and largest convents in the Philippines highlight the island’s deep Catholic heritage.
For the more adventurous, a trek into the Cantabon Cave is both challenging and rewarding. Inside, you’ll find intricate stalactite and stalagmite formations and a serene underground pool perfect for those drawn to nature’s secrets.
